Designed in 1969 by artist/architect Gaetano Pesce, the UP Series was developed by C&B Italia (now B&B Italia) to take full advantage of the companies advanced manufacturing technologies. This was not the first collaboration between the designer and furniture maker, but it was the greatest success with the UP5 and 6 (Woman and Child) instantly claiming its status as an icon. The ability of C&B Italia to transform Pesce’ ideas into such a beautiful product lead to the creation of the rest of the series. A unique collection with a distinct and quirky personality.

This complete Roland ‘System 100′ is so dope. I tried one at Gula studios a few years ago. It’s stunning!!!

When the doors open to the 45th International Motor Show in Frankfurt, the sensation is perfect. With his Ace of Spades Study, Karmann presents a four-seater coupe, setting standards both inside and out: under the wedge-shaped car body and behind large window panes a futuristic cockpit with drum-shaped instrument panels and narrow sporty steering wheel. The coupe, based on an Audi 80, was created with help of Giorgio Giugiaro. Next to the unusual shape the car body. other details cause a great deal of discussion: such as the removable shopping bags that can be unbuttoned from the interior door lining.

“Who enters here leaves care behind, leaves sorrow behind, leaves petty envies and jealousies behind.”So went the motto of the original Clover Club, a select group of Philadelphia journalists who, from 1882 until the 1920’s met once a month at the Bellevue Hotel to eat and drink and talk. The only people the above words didn’t necessarily apply to were their guests, celebrities of the day who were invited to address the club and were heckled relentlessly once they did—the more pretentious or self-important they were, the worse they got it. But they came anyway. Maybe it was because “Major” Moses P. Handy, the club’s president, knew everyone who was anyone and was liked by them all. Or maybe it was the challenge—if you could get over with the Clover Club, you could get over anywhere. Probably, though, they came and took their lumps because of George Boldt. Boldt, you see, was the Bellevue’s manager, and—in all matters pertaining to food and drink, anyway—he was a perfectionist. To sit at his table was worth a little ribbing. Throw in a couple of the club’s famous cocktails, and you’d be singing along with the best of ‘em: “While we live we live in clover; When we die we die all over!

Its name translates as “home for artists.” No, it’s not a communal crash pad for the bohemian fringe, but a choice and select boutique hotel where a different German artist designed and individually furnished each of the guest rooms. Under historic preservation, the hotel is in a restored 1825 city palace. Clients from the arts, media, and even the political or business world are drawn to this unusual hostelry. Each room comes as a total surprise, and, of course, you’re treated to some of each artist’s work, which runs the gamut from Andy Warhol-like pop to classicism. Some units evoke modern minimalism, whereas others are much more quirky.

Made in a limited edition of 20-25 pieces for Stig Poulsson’s own gallery at Bredgade in Copenhagen.

The visual inspiration for the design of the Violet Hour was drawn from the pared down styles of the early 19th century English Georgian and French Directory. The English club and the French salon were the beginning of the modern venue for socializing and drinking. The project not only uses stylistic cues from these precedents but more importantly uses spatial references such as the partitioning of space into several smaller rooms, the use of extra high wing back furniture groupings, and the breaking down of the bar into several separate lengths; all designed to create places of intimacy conducive to the art of conversation. The cocktail takes center stage in each room with the curtained partitions acting to frame the bartenders and with the high mirrored back bar cabinets acting to highlight the numerous specialty liquors and ingredients.

Perhaps the most famous Aston Martin because of the specially equipped silver birch Aston Martin DB5 that starred in the James Bond films “Goldfinger” and “Thunderball”. The Aston Martin DB5 made a comeback to the big screen in the 1995 film “GoldenEye”.Regarded by many as the most beautiful Aston Martin produced, Aston Martin DB5 shares many similar traits to Aston Martin DB4. However, DB5’s most substantial change occurred under the bonnet. The 6 cylinder engine increased its capacity to 4 litres by increasing the bore to 96mm. Significant too was the introduction of a true full synchromesh ZF 5 speed gearbox. Other chassis changes included the adoption of the Girling disc brakes that had only been used on the Aston Martin DB4 GT, and 15″ wheels.A convertible was also offered and was available with a steel hard top with an exceptionally large rear window.

The Cardin fashion house will celebrate its 60th anniversary in 2010, an occasion that calls for a retrospective of the work of its founder, designer Pierre Cardin. Born in 1922 in Sant’Andrea de Barbarana, Venice province, Pierre Cardin immigrated to Paris in 1924 with his parents, who were thrown into poverty by World War I. After working briefly with Elsa Schiaparelli, Cardin joined Dior in 1946 and opened his own couture house in 1950.He was a pioneer from the start, creating a design-based, architectural fashion with a futurist sensibility. Cardin also had a pioneer’s understanding of fashion’s relationship to new audiences, presenting his collections to large crowds. He was the first to demonstrate that fashion can be both a creative process and a business—and that one man can excel as both a businessman and an artist. This volume is a tribute to an iconoclastic – and now iconic – designer, entrepreneur, and visionary.

Ed van der Elsken was born on 10 March 1925 in Amsterdam in the Netherlands. He lived with fellow photographer Ata Kandó (b. 1913 Budapest, Hungary) and her three children among the ‘ruffians’ and bohemians of Paris from 1950 to 1954. Ata was a principled documentarian whose pictures taken in the forests of the Amazon among the Piraoa and Yekuana tribes are her best known, but her more poetic leanings, exemplified in her later Droom in het Woud (Dream in the Wood 1957) must also have been an influence on van der Elsken. Much of his work subjectively documented his own energetic and eccentric life experience, presaging the work of Larry Clark, Nan Goldin or Wolfgang Tillmans. His adopted family and their lives became the subjects of his photographs along with the people he met including, during this Paris period, Edward Steichen who used many of the photographer’s images in a survey of Postwar European Photography and in “The Family of Man”, and probably Robert Frank (who found and introduced European photographers to Steichen). Another encounter was with Vali Myers (1930-2003) who became the haunting kohl-eyed heroine of his roman à clef “Love on the left bank” (Een liefdesgeschiedenis in Saint-Germain-des-Prés), designed by Dutch graphic designer, sculptor, typographer Jurriaan (William) Schrofer (1926-1990). It was the first of some twenty van der Elsken publications, and quickly sold out. Twenty years later Myers appears in his film ‘Death in the Port Jackson Hotel’ (1972, 36 min. 16 mm colour).

The Buick XP300 was one of two new dream cars built in 1951, the other being the GM LeSabre. Collaborators on the Buick Y-Job, Harley Earl and Charles Chayne split ways and both built dream cars to compete with each other. Chayne’s car was the XP300, while Earl’s was the LeSabre. The two cars shared many components that included the supercharged V-8 engines, push-button seats and windows, and power jacks that were operated by the driver. Despite these similarities, the two cars had radically different styling. The XP300 had an almost typical Buick look to it, but it was much wider and longer than the production Buicks at the time.

So why do we not put plugholes in the most logical places? Why do we do everything we can to hide them? And why are they not simply part of our interior design? Neffa generally looks at things slightly differently, and under the title ‘I Want’ contact has developed a number of solutions to properly display wall sockets. With ‘I Want’ contact (from the Dutch wandcontact, meaning ‘wall socket’) Neffa hopes to demonstrate that plugholes are simple to incorporate into their surroundings. For example, plugholes can easily be integrated into your wall’s design, combined with the pattern of your curtains or accentuated using a handsome frame. In the last example, the plugholes are covered with fabric and placed in a frame to turn them into something extraordinary and striking.

The Most Expensive Book of the 20th Century is Back! SUMO was a titanic book in every respect: a 480-page tribute to one of the 20th century’s most influential, intriguing and controversial photographers, it broke records for weight, dimensions, and resale price.Helmut Newton (1920–2004) always demonstrated a healthy disdain for easy or predictable solutions. SUMO—a bold and unprecedented publishing venture—was an irresistible project. The idea of a spectacular compendium of images, a book with the dimensions of a private exhibition, reproduced to exceptional page size and to state-of-the-art origination and printing standards, emerged from an open, exploratory dialogue between photographer and publisher. With the physically commanding SUMO weighing in—boxed and shrink-wrapped—at 35.4 kilos, Newton created a landmark book that stood head and shoulders above anything previously attempted, both in terms of conceptual extravagance and technical specifications.Published in an edition of 10,000 signed and numbered copies, SUMO sold out soon after publication and quickly multiplied its value. This worldwide publishing sensation now features in numerous important collections around the world, including New York’s Museum of Modern Art. Legendary SUMO copy number one, autographed by over 100 of the book’s featured celebrities, also broke the record for the most expensive book published in the 20th century, selling at auction in Berlin on April 6, 2000 for 620,000 German Marks – approximately $430,000.SUMO established new standards for the art monograph genre, and secured a prominent place in photo-book history. This new edition is the fulfillment of an ambition conceived some years ago by Helmut Newton. He would surely be pleased that, a decade on from its first publication, SUMO—now in a format that allows for a more democratic distribution—will reach the widest possible audience. However, proud owners of the new edition won’t wrestle with their copy of SUMO. It comes with a unique stand for displaying the book at home.

Shell with upholstery and seat cushion, brushed stainless steel base. Made in Germany by Vitra.”Most people spend their lives living in dreary, beige conformity, mortally afraid of using colors. The main purpose of my work is to provoke people into using their imagination and make their surroundings more exciting.” -Verner PantonIn the mid-1950’s, Verner panton converted a Volkswagen bus into a mobile studio and travelled across Europe. In 1958 he returned to Denmark full of unconventional ideas… one of which evolved into the iconic Heart Cone Chair. Defying gravity, the cone was both futuristic and shocking… so much so that when it was exhibited in a shop window in New York City police had to order its removal due to the traffic chaos its presence created. A comfortable club chair for everyday use, Vitra has faithfully re-issued this classic in close collaboration with the Panton estate. Via The Dieline … “Launching hits that are popular in the club scene is pretty sweet and all, but until you’ve launched your own branded non-music product, you haven’t really made it in the music business. That’s why Adidja Palmer, known in the Jamaican dancehall world as Vybz Kartel, went into the rum business. Well, that, and having your own line of premium handcrafted rums is pretty damn cool.To make sure the bottle was sexy enough for the upscale dancehall crowd, Vybz entrusted the branding to Project 13, who knows sexy. We also know a little something about logo and label design, plus the printing and production processes, all of which helped us tackle the challenges of designing branding for a rum bottle with no flat surfaces. Undaunted, we developed a unique shoulder wrap and neck label featuring a contemporary VYBZ logo that instantly lets discriminating rum drinkers know they’re in the presence of a premium product.Organic line work and a regal seal of excellence ensure an elegant look, while the incorporation of a small hummingbird in the design gives a nod to the rum’s Jamaican roots. We also designed with function in mind, as each label must be hand applied and numbered during bottling, a slow and exacting process appropriate to the slow and exacting process of making the triple-distilled silver rum and handcrafted oak-aged rum that are the pillars of the Vybz brand.”

Massachusetts based Aries was a synth manufacturer that offered modular “kits” for modules and modular systems as well as pre-assembled systems such as the Aries 300 series. The Aries 300 is a classic modular system that competed against the Moog, Arp, Buchla, E-mu, and Roland modular systems of the time. They sound very good and can be found in various configurations as seen in these photos. They are purely analog monophonic synths with classic wood paneling, un-cosmetic appearance, mean filters, plenty of envelope, LFO, modulation, analog sequencing, VCOs, and more! A remote 61 note CV/GATE keyboard, tons of knobs and patch-points give you a very flexible analog monster.

The Lancia Aurelia is considered by many to be the first true Gran Turismo automobile. Designed by Vittorio Jano, the Aurelia was launched in 1950 and production lasted through the summer of 1958. The Aurelia used the first production V6 engine, a 60° design developed by de Virgilio, a Lancia engineer who worked under Jano which grew from 1.8 L to 2.5 L. It was an all-alloy pushrod design with a single camshaft between the cylinder banks. A hemispherical combustion chamber and inline valves were used. A single Weber 40 carburettor completed the engine. At the rear was an innovative combination transaxle with the gearbox, clutch, differential, and inboard-mounted drum brakes. The front suspension was a sliding pillar design, with rear semi-trailing arms replaced by a de Dion tube in the Fourth series.

The Mercedes-Benz Type 300 (chassis codes W186, W188, and W189) were the company’s largest and most-prestigious models throughout the 1950s. Analogous to today’s S-Class, the Type 300 cars were elegant, powerful, exclusive, and expensive. This series was also often called the Adenauer after Konrad Adenauer, Chancellor of Germany at the time. Adenauer used six of these cars during his time as Chancellor. The majority of the company’s sales at this time were in the less-expensive Ponton series. Both the Type 300 and Ponton series were replaced by the “Heckflosse” cars of the early 1960s.
